•CONTACT METHOD:
yawningdodo on Plurk or PM to this journal
•THREAD-JACKING: Go for it, but please check in first if it's a log
•FOURTH WALLING / CANON PUNCTURE: No thank you!
•BACKTAGGING: Yes, but if it's been more than three weeks since the last tag, let's talk OOCly about how to move it toward a wrap-up
•AVOIDED TOPICS: None come to mind; will update as needed.
•PREFERRED GENDER PRONOUN: she/her
IC CHARACTERISTICS:
•CURRENT CANON POINT: Upon being eaten by a shark while evading well-meaning wildlife rehabilitators.
•PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Nonmagical beings will typically perceive Moira as entirely human. She's a pale young woman with dark hair; look close and she has more wiry muscle than one might expect, as well as a scattering of scars all over her body from a lifetime of cuts and scrapes. For anyone with the ability to see through a fae glamour one way or another, her eyes are too dark for a human, her teeth too sharp, her fingernails too much like claws. She is a selkie, with the ability to become a seal by donning her pelt. In her animal form she is a fairly average harbor seal with speckled fur.
She doesn't smell great; at the time of her arrival on the Barge her scent is primarily a mix of seaweed and body odor. That will get better if someone convinces her to shower. She dresses herself carelessly, throwing on whatever she finds in the communal wardrobe that sort of fits her, then wearing it until it's too torn or too gross even for her. She typically goes about barefoot on calloused soles. When she speaks, it's with a distinctly Bostonian accent and a general lack of volume control.
•DEMEANOR: Imagine a cornered animal, and you've got Moira as she is on the Barge. As someone who's spent her life solidly in the middle of the food chain, she's quick to seize an opportunity, but equally quick to flee from danger. She's terrified to be here and to be trapped among humans.
•ABILITIES:
Moira is a pretty average selkie--that is, a seal who can cast off her pelt to become human (or perhaps a human with a pelt she can don to become a seal). Her ability to transform is entirely voluntary and requires only that she is in possession of her pelt. In human form selkies like her retain a high tolerance to the cold and the ability to hold their breath for minutes at a time, though neither to the full measure possible in seal form. In human form she wears an involuntary glamour that grants her the illusion of full humanity at all times, similar to that which a true fae can don at will.
While a true fae creature would be physically burned by iron, selkies are only uncomfortable around iron and its alloys; this takes the form of the metal always feeling too hot, too cold, or even electric to the touch, though the effect is largely psychosomatic. The magic that enables transformation is bound up in a selkie’s seal pelt, and the pelt is as much a part of them as the rest of their body and soul even when it has been shed. A selkie without her pelt is trapped in human form and bound to whoever possesses the skin. While the theft of a pelt does not rob a selkie of all free will or make her an automaton, a selkie is unable to harm their pelt’s keeper and is compelled to obey that person's orders.
•MEDICAL INFORMATION: Moira is shockingly healthy for someone who's never gone to the doctor.
•CABIN INFORMATION (Deck 5, Cabin 11):The door looks like one that might appear in any modern house, and leads to a room that looks more like a guest room than a home. There's little in it other than a bed, a nightstand and lamp, and a big cedar chest with a locking lid. A wallpaper border near the ceiling depicts stylized ocean waves.
Behind a blue wooden door, Moira's cabin contains a dock extending about 10 feet from the door and a rocky shore that provides at least a little space to haul out of the water on all sides. The seawater area itself is about 15 feet in diameter and deepens rapidly from the shore to a maximum depth of about 8 feet at the center.
•OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS: Sharks.
IC PERMISSIONS:
•MENTAL: Yes, but let's talk first.
•MIMICRY: Yes, but let's talk first.
•VIOLENCE: Yes, but let's talk first, and be aware that she bites.
•MAGIC: Yes, but let's talk first.
•DEBATE: She's going to either storm off or hit them, but they're free to try!
•OTHER / NOTES: For all her prickly isolationism, I'd like Moira to be forced to deal with other people. SHe has to learn sometime!
